What are eggshell stickers?
The sticker that does not come off. Thin paper, permanent glue, and a face that cracks into pieces when anyone tries to peel it.
The short version
An eggshell sticker is printed on destructible paper, usually around 2 mil thick, with a permanent adhesive. Normal vinyl stickers are built to peel off cleanly. Eggshell is built to fail during removal. Pull on a corner and the face shatters into small flakes, like an eggshell, which is where the name comes from. Getting one off a surface means scraping it off a piece at a time.
Where they came from
Security labels. Warranty seals, "void if removed" stickers, inspection tags, the labels on the back of electronics. The point was to make tampering obvious. Street artists and graffiti writers picked the material up in the early 2000s because it made their stickers hard to buff, and "eggshell" became the standard word for them in that world. If you have seen a sticker that looks half scraped off and still readable, that was probably eggshell.
Eggshell vs vinyl
Vinyl
Thicker, glossy or matte, often laminated, usually waterproof. Peels off in one piece. Good for laptops, bottles, cars, anything you might want to remove someday. Our single and 5-pack stickers are vinyl for that reason.
Eggshell
Thin, matte, paper-based. Most printers rate it around two years outdoors, though we make no promises about any specific sticker. Does not peel. Flakes. Cheaper per piece in volume, which is why bulk runs are usually eggshell. Our 500 and 2,500 runs are 2 inch eggshell.
How to apply one
- Clean, dry surface. Dust or oil under the sticker is the only way it comes off easily.
- Peel from the backing slowly. The face is fragile until it is down.
- Press from the center out with a thumb or a card. Air bubbles under eggshell stay there.
- Flat surfaces only. Eggshell does not like curves or textured paint.
- Get it right the first time. Repositioning tears it.
A word on where
Because eggshell is built to stay, put it where you mean it. Your own laptop, bottle, case, board or bumper. A bulletin board that allows it. A friend's car with permission. Public and private property you do not own is a fine or worse in most places, and the whole point of the material is that it will not come off afterward.
Why our bulk runs use it
A chapter hands out 500 stickers over a semester. Most go on laptops and bottles and live there for a year or two. Eggshell costs about half what vinyl does at that quantity, holds up fine indoors, and every one has freepalestinestickers.com printed on it, so the person who sees one on a laptop in a lecture hall can find their own.
